About Unix Timestamps

What is Unix Time?

Unix time counts the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the "Unix epoch"). It's used universally in databases, APIs, and logs.

Seconds vs Milliseconds

Most Unix timestamps are in seconds (10 digits). JavaScript's Date.now() returns milliseconds (13 digits). Values above 9,999,999,999 are treated as milliseconds.

Year 2038 Problem

32-bit signed integers storing Unix seconds overflow on January 19, 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit integers which won't overflow for billions of years.
